Parent and Carer Progression Pathways

(Published: 11th December 2018)

In recent months HeadStart and our partner organisations who work with parents and carers, have been meeting to agree a Progression Pathway for all those parents and carers who engage with HeadStart or one of our commissioned providers.

The diagram and animated film below illustrate the routes available to parents and carers, from initial engagement with HeadStart through to opportunities including employment, training, or Parent Ambassador roles.

Localised HeadStart Delivery

HeadStart commissioned providers work with parents and carers in four areas around the city:

  • WV10 Consortium (Area A, Low Hill, Scotlands and Bushbury South) -  a Job Change programme, confidence building, and volunteering opportunities

  • Gazebo (Area C, Bilston East) - a 12 week peer support programme, family activities in holidays, and a homework club that parents can attend with their children

  • YMCA Black Country (Area B and Area D, Heath Town, Park Village, Eastfield, Springfield and Old Heath / All Saints, Blakenhall, Parkfields and Ettingshall) - Zumba and food and mood programmes with families and their children

Adult HEROs via Wider Learning

Wider Learning is a HeadStart contracted provider and provides Adults HEROs across all four HeadStart areas:

Adult HEROs includes the delivery of six modules in 2 days based on topics including online safety and SUMO (Stop, Understand, Move On).

Parent Champions

In partnership with the City Council, Parent Champions give parents and carers the opportunity to volunteer and follow an induction programme with HeadStart and the Strengthening Families Hubs. This then leads to volunteering opportunities working with families, HeadStart and with family workers from the Strengthening Families Hubs.

Employment/Training/Voluntary Work

Parents and carers, having accessed one of the volunteering opportunities, can then choose to access other opportunities advertised across the City.

Parent Ambassadors

The City Council offers parents and carers who are skilled in a community language the opportunity to train and become a Parent Ambassador working with schools to support other parents who are often newly arrived in the City. Parent/carers interested in this opportunity can contact the HeadStart Community Development Coordinators to begin the process (call 01902 550851).
